First, I'd like to say congratulations to you. Whether you plan to write a little or a lot, an article here and there, or treat it like a real job and write, write, write, you have picked a fine website to provide content for. I write for a few, and Associated Content is by far the most elite and professional website I have ever written for.
There are as many ways to get started as there are people, the important thing is to find what works best for you. I don't know how much you already know, so I am approaching this article from the standpoint of the questions I am being asked by the new Content Producers I have recruited.
My suggestion is that you familiarize yourself with the site a bit, by checking out some of the articles that interest you. There are tutorials and articles such as this one that talk about some of the different aspects of writing for Associated Content. Spend some time reading the guidelines and articles.
Now you've got a feel for things and how they work. You probably already have some ideas for articles. What's the best way to get started? Some of the new content producers thought they had to hit the publish button and then just start writing, which was a particularly frightening thought to them. Rest assured; that is not necessary.
What I do, and you may wish to do also, is to write my articles on Microsoft Word. I can research and write for however long I like, until my article is ready to be published. Once it's ready, I log into the Associated Content website and hit the publish tab.
You will need to choose the category for your article and so forth, which is pretty explanatory. Once you get to the place where the article goes, you will hit the Microsoft word symbol and copy and paste your article body.
Please be sure you have completed a spell check and have put plenty of paragraphs for ease in reading. After you paste your article, check it again to make sure the paragraphs are correct and have not messed up. Do not include your name or biography in the article. This appears on your content producer page and your articles are all linked to your page.
Continue along, completing all the simple and easy to follow steps. Once completed you will have your first article submitted. Check it again and make sure everything is correct. Since you are new, it will not show up on the site until it has been reviewed. Once you have experience you can submit articles for page view money only and they will show up immediately.
If the article is submitted for payment it will still need to be reviewed and an offer made or suggestions for changes or outright rejection. In most cases, rejected articles may still be submitted for page view money only. It usually takes about a week to receive an offer on submitted content. The higher your clout level, the higher your offer, as a rule. You can learn more about clout by reading Understanding the Clout Index at Associated Content.
Another way to get higher offers is to use keywords. Keywords are words people might type into "Google" to search for information about something. I do not need to spend a lot of time explaining key words because there is already an excellent article explaining the key words in the Keyword Density Not Enough for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) article.
Another important aspect you will want to consider is the title of your article. Your title is extremely important. It should accurately convey the information in the article in such as way as to make it searchable. More information on title writing can be found in the article Solving the mystery of title writing - once and for all.
When you are submitting your article and you get to the point where you key in five keywords, this is where you will put five other words, which are not already in your title. Words people might use while searching for the information contained in your article.
Associated content prefers more specific and targeted articles and pays more for such quality articles. For example, an article entitled, "Where to buy clothes online" will not get as much as an article entitled, "Where to buy plus-sized clothes online" but what would most likely get you an even higher offer would be, "Where to buy Goth plus-sized clothes online". The more specific the title and content, the better.
So knowing all this, you should be able to write some pretty great quality articles that will net you some nice offers. Keep in mind, even if you get an offer and accept it, you will still be paid for page views. Once a month, on the tenth of the month or so, you will get paid for the page views of all your articles, providing you have not let six months lapse without publishing an article. Please make sure you have a Paypal account set up with associated content to receive your payments.
If you write an article that is timely and you do not wish to wait a week or so for it to be published, you should publish it for page views only. It may seem like nickels and dimes, but it adds up. The more articles you have, the more this amounts to. I know there are people making a whole lot of money on their page views alone.
Once you have published your article, you will get an email with the link to it. I personally find it helpful to make a folder for these emails and save them. I also have a Microsoft document where I copy and paste the link to each article so I can quickly find a link whenever I am on a site or talking to a person I wish to share the article with.
How do you get lots of page views, i.e.: money? Promote, promote, promote! You make sure to put your link or RSS feed on every social networking site you are on that allows it. You participate in forums and discussions, where your link is the expert article you copy and paste to the discussion. There is actually a very well written article explaining everything you need to know. When you are ready to promote your article please read "The last article promotion guide you'll ever need" Keep in mind, it may seem time-consuming, but once you've put a link somewhere it will keep on drawing people in. Also, whenever someone views one of your articles, they will see a list of other articles you have written they can click on, so you could end up with a lot of page views.
You will need to learn how to use the social bookmarking tools, (those little icons you see above your article title that say, "Promote your content".) If you would like to read an article with more information on how to do this, please read A Quick Tutorial on Submitting Your Content to Social Bookmarking Sites to Increase Traffic.
The easiest one to use, in my opinion, is Twitter. If you make a twitter account and don't log out of it, it's as simple as clicking the twitter link. Just click the icon of the social bookmarking site you wish to promote your article on and follow the instructions. You may use them all, if you wish, but I prefer picking a few and alternating to see which ones work best. It is my understanding it is better to wait a day or two for associated content to get the advertising added to your article before promoting it.
Another way to get page views is by subscribing to your favorite content producers and when you get the email saying they have been published, you click the link, read and rate their article, leaving a comment so they know you did it. Most content producers will return the favor. By the same token, when you see other content producers have commented on your article, you should click their picture, which will take you to a list of their articles, find one that interests you, and reciprocate.
The most rewarding way to get a lot of page views is to get your friends and family to subscribe to your content. It really makes me proud when I go to my mom's house to visit and she starts telling me about the great article she read online today, and then shows me the printed copy of one of my articles. It feels great to know your friends and family are reading what you write. There is a place where you can sign them up yourself, but I would not do this without asking them first if it is okay.
There are groups of fellow content producers on Facebook, Myspace, Linked, Twitter, and many other sites. There is a Ning social networking site exclusively for AC Content Producers. If you want to have "coworkers" who can also become friends, these are great places to meet other content producers and take an interest in each other's work. When you read and rate each other, you are helping each other while gaining from each other's knowledge at the same time.
